Excessive paint has rendered the lock above useless and pulley cord is broken, but restoration of this hardware, along with the window sashes themselves, restores the overall function and appearance of the windows.

This window needs only minor repairs to function properly although many people would rush to replace it. The top sash is stuck open because one of its cords is broken (left). The result is air infiltration—the primary reason old windows are often drafty. Cold air gets in and warm air escapes out the top and at the meeting rail (right) where the top and bottom sash come together. When this window is repaired, its owners will save on energy bills without replacing
their windows.

Every year, thousands of windows are hastily replaced because they don't work properly. Most older windows like the one on the left, have functioned for more than a century. They are still perfectly serviceable and may need only minor repairs. After restoration on the right, these old windows look and function like new and will for another 50 to 100 years.
